Wow, 5 weeks has flow by. This week has been another of big changes. We removed the box from their nighttime pen and enlarged their daytime pen. Penny is starting to spend nights completely away from them. They are eating ground up food, softened kibbles and still are nursing multiple times a day. Several people have asked what we are feeding. It’s Fromm Puppy Gold.
We sent in their DNA swabs for the MDR1 gene (multidrug resistance gene). This is a gene that could make them sensitive to certain drugs. http://vcpl.vetmed.wsu.edu/ It affects 50% of Australian Shepherds and many other herding type breeds. Penny is -/- (normal/normal) which means she doesn’t carry the gene. Cole is +/- which means he carries one copy of the gene and the puppies could be either -/- or +/- so we decided to test.
We tried to weigh the puppies today, but I’m not sure the results are completely accurate. They outgrew our small scale and were too small for our human one. We ended up weighing with and without puppy but that didn’t seem to give accurate results (our scale was being funny). Anyway, here are the weights we got:
Cranberry 6.5 lbs, Stuffin 7.1 lbs, Punkin 6.8 lbs, Giblet 6.5 lbs, Gravy 6.8 lbs and Turkey 7 lbs
The main focus starting this week is socialization/enrichment for the puppies which means exposing them to as many different sights sounds as we can think of. We also started the basics of clicker training. http://www.clickertraining.com/what_is_clicker_training
The first lessons are simple……click, treat, repeat. (sorry for the blurry photos)
